Answer: The medical term for male breasts is called “Gynecomastia” – Increase in both fat and glands in the breast. It is commonly called Man boobs or Male boobs.

Why do men have breast development?
Estrogen is the female hormone. Testosterone is the male hormone. The fact is both men and women have both estrogen and testosterone. The predominance of one hormone over the other dictates the development of the sexual characters before birth and at puberty.
At puberty, there is a surge of estrogen in both sexes. This temporary increase of estrogen in males is responsible for the male breasts during adolescence. This is part of normal development. The normal change can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years with some personal variation.

Causes of Male Breasts:
- Persistence of the pubertal change is the cause of male breasts in 25% of the cases.
- Other Known causes:
- Obesity – fat gets deposited in the breast area. This is a rising problem in the US. This is not called Gynecomastia by doctors as there is no gland development.
- Drugs of abuse:
- Alcohol
- Marijuana or weed
- Heroine or methadone
- Amphetamine or “Meth” or “Speed”.
- Prescription drugs: In 25% of men drugs are the cause. Tell your doctor, so he can change your medicine
- Drugs used to treat Hypertension, seizures, depression, psychosis, acid reflux, HIV.
- Antibiotics are commonly implicated.
- Hormonal preparations used for body building or other purposes.
- Herbal products as they have estrogen like activity.
- Cirrhosis of the liver. ( disease of the liver)
- Long term disease of the kidney
- Increase in thyroid hormone. (Thyroid is a gland in the front of the neck).
- Cancer of the Testes and Prostate.
- Inherited disease: Klinefelter’s syndrome. Seen during adolescence. Absence of development of male sexual characters along with male boobs should raise suspicion.
- Aging – due to loss of testosterone with age.
- In another 25% of men cause is unknown even after exhaustive evaluation by a doctor.
Note: Breast cancer in men is not common but it can mimic man boobs.
Problems from Gynecomastia:
- Can have pain and discharge from nipple.
- Psychological problems due to fear of ridicule, etc.
- Problems with sexual life due to physical appearance.
Talk to a doctor:
- It is important to get it checked.
- Your doctor can check to see if this is normal or if it is anything to worry.
- If it happens in adolescence, the doctor usually waits for at least 2-3 years. If it persists beyond this period, or if you have significant pain or discharge then treatment is necessary.
- Review your medication list.
- In middle age it is important to make sure you do not have any other diseases which can cause this problem.
-Avoid alcohol or other substances if no other cause is found.

Treatment options:
1. If it begins in adolescence, the teenager must be reassured that it is a natural phenomenon. However, it must go away on its own within 6-24 months. If it persists, he must see a doctor.
2. Drugs that inhibit estrogen e.g. Tamoxifen, Raloxifen can be used.
Warning: It is not approved by FDA. Being used by physician based on clinical experience.
- Liposuction: Only the fat is removed but glands are still left.
- Breast reduction surgery.
- Removal of breast, called “Mastectomy”.
